Similar to Overhead Traction Elevators, MRL Traction elevators are driven by an electric motor that is connected to a series of cables and sheaves. These cables connect to the elevator cab and counterweight frame and move over an electric drive sheave therefore creating vertical movement of the cab.
The MAJOR difference comes from this elevator system NOT requiring a machine room. A small control room is only required typically at the lowest or top landing adjacent to the hoistway. This elevator's dynamic setup allows for maximum vertical stops while limiting the necessary overhead, therefore allowing roof access via elevator without the huge bulkhead!
The large majority of MRL elevators are AC Gearless machines which allow for limited maintenance and a long lifespan. Typically MRL elevators are installed in low to mid-rise applications with speeds up to 500 FPM.
